The Town of Sterling Recreation Department’s Y.A.H.O.O. program connects the youth of our community together with older residents through fun and service.
For four or five Saturdays in both the spring and fall, youth from Sterling and neighboring towns get together to assist senior homeowners with light yard cleanup. The program is all volunteer and completely supported through donations.
Our young volunteers gather with their friends at the Sterling Town Hall by 8:40 AM and then are shuttled to the work site by Y.A.H.O.O. adult volunteers called “Drivervisors”.
Y.A.H.O.O. is led by a “Youth Board”, consisting of ten to twelve youth leaders. The Youth Board (with assistance from adult directors) coordinates, organizes, schedules, and administers the program.
Any youth, from grade 7 through 12, is invited to join Y.A.H.O.O. by registering using the electronic form on this site. You do not have to live in Sterling to volunteer.
Adults are enthusiastically invited to volunteer time as well. Even working just one weekend is a tremendous help. We ALWAYS need “Drivervisors” — adults who drive the youth volunteers to and from the work site. Drivervisors may also assist with the light yard work if they wish. The BEST part is experiencing the wonderful sense of community and pride in the youth of our community!
